Miles Aldridge est un photographe britannique que j’admire énormément. J’ai visité une galerie qui exposait certains de ses clichés lorsque j’étais en voyage à New York. Les voir en grand format, avec leurs couleurs si éclatantes et leur netteté extraordinaire, a été une expérience saisissante.
Je lui envie ce don pour la mise en scène avec des mannequins figés (alors que je ne fais personnellement que des photos non calculées, naturelles, sur le vif). Loin d’être lisses, les photographies de Miles Aldridge n’en sont que plus fortes, elles véhiculent une ambiance, un mystère assez noir en dessous de la surface lisse et parfaite. Leur message va bien au delà de la simple présentation de vêtements ou accessoires.
En me renseignant sur Miles Aldridge, j’ai appris que les difficultés familiales qu’il avait vécues enfant (père ayant refait sa vie, mère qui luttait pour joindre les deux bouts) ont profondément inspiré son oeuvre. La figure maternelle faisant face à l’adversité sans ciller est très présente, tout comme celle de sa sœur mannequin qui quittait sa vie misérable pour se muer en personnages glamour, dont le vernis ne laissait pas transparaître le réel. Miles Aldridge dit lui même qu’il y a de la noirceur dans son travail. « Mes photos doivent toujours refléter mon anxiété par rapport au monde » rapportait une interview du magazine anglais Standard. Et c’est justement cela qui les rend si intéressantes.

Miles Aldridge is a British photographer that I greatly admire. I visited a gallery that displayed some of his photoshoots when I was traveling in New York. Viewing his pics in large format, with their so vivid colors and extraordinary sharpness was a thrilling experience.
I envy him this gift for staging models with a fixed expression (although I personally do not calculate when I take pictures, I shoot on the fly most of the time). Far from being smooth, Miles Aldridge’s photos are even stronger, they convey a mood, a pretty black mystery below the smooth and perfect surface. Their message goes far beyond the simple presentation of clothing or accessories.
While doing research about Miles Aldridge, I learned that the family problems he experienced as a child (father having a new life, mother struggling to make ends meet) have deeply inspired his work. The mother figure facing adversity without blinking is very present, as well as his sister model who left her miserable life to turn into glamorous characters, the varnish not betraying the reality. Miles Aldridge said himself that there is darkness in his work. « My pictures always have to reflect my anxiety about the world », reported an interview with the Standard British magazine. And that is precisely what makes them so interesting.
